It has been about four month’s since Teen Mom’s hellraiser, Amber Portwood chose life behind bars over a court ordered drug problem. Drastic times call for equally drastic measures and back then Amber simply didn’t feel like she was capable of staying clean and sober. The desperate star concluded that the only way to ensure her own safety was to request jail time, a move that theoretically would keep her out of trouble and away from the drugs. This move also completely ripped her out of the active life of her four-year-old daughter Leah and left baby daddy, Gary Shirley to raise the little one alone. He recently spoke to In Touch and talked about how he handles caring for his daughter primarily alone,
“I haven’t been able to say to her, ‘Mommy’s in jail’. When I tried to tell her Mommy’s in trouble, she got upset, so I’ve said, ‘Mommy’s at work, or ‘Mommy’s on vacation.’ I’m doing the best I can,” he insists. Still, he often feels so overwhelmed that he’s brought to tears. “The last time I cried was two weeks ago. It’s so important to have help with Leah, and people aren’t always there. It’s very frustrating.”
Gary hasn’t always been the best role model either and his relationship with Amber over the years has been volatile at best, but at least he is stepping up and trying to raise Leah himself. Too little help means that he really is doing the bulk of the parenting and not just ditching his kid with a grandparent to do all of the hard work.
Do you think that Leah is in good hands with Gary or do you think she would be better off being raised by someone else? Can Gary do it himself? Also when should he clue Leah in to the truth about her mother? At what age do you think he should start to ease her into the truth of the situation?
