If Lana Del Ray’s rendition of “Once Upon a Dream” hasn’t piqued your interest yet, a new twist in the retelling of ‘Sleeping Beauty‘ will. In ‘Maleficent,’ the villain gets her moment in the spotlight. We all know the typical story – 16 year old Princess Aurora pricks her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and is cursed.
In this version, audiences discover why Maleficent is so ticked off that she invites herself to the christening of the king’s kid and dooms her to an early death. We were given hints as the plot summary revealed she was, “Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora.”
In a new clip featuring Angelina Jolie as The Mistress of Evil, her secret is exposed. She had wings…once. She notes that they were “strong” and “stolen” from her. In previous teasers, we saw Jolie in her be-horned glory talking with Aurora like she was Tim Gunn mentoring a faltering ‘Project Runway’ contestant as to lure her into a false sense of security. This mini-clip is far more revealing and hits the point of interest.
It also gives away the fact that Maleficent isn’t a witch or evil queen…she is/was a dark fairy. Her wings were a source of power as moments of her time with the ability to fly show her using them in battle.
As for filming, Jolie revealed the grace of it all came from her workout regimen. “She [stunt coordinator Eunice Huthart] made me do yoga. And I have no patience for yoga,” Angelina said. “It’s not something I do easily, because I’m not a still person. But I was forced to do yoga because (to fly) you have to have your core strength to be able to hold yourself.“
