Gareth Edwards is riding high today. Actually, he’ll probably be riding high for the next three years, at least. The man went from directing a $500,000 indie sensation named Monsters to landing the gig of directing the $150 million Godzilla, and now he’s landed a Star Wars spin-off film. Not bad for the first three movies on his filmography, and definitely an improving pattern. I mean, going from an indie to Godzilla to Star Wars isn’t bad, especially considering that he’s also coming back for the Godzilla sequel. This is what happens when your movie over performs its tracking by almost $20 million, landing a huge opening weekend around the world and earning favorable reviews.
To be fair, Edwards clearly has talent at visuals, but he still needs to get a better handle on story if he’s going to direct a Star Wars film. Then again, we still don’t know which Star Wars spin-off he’ll be directing, but we do know that it’ll come out on December 16th, 2016. It’ll likely focus on the younger version of an iconic Star Wars character, perhaps Han Solo or Boba Fett as has been rumored in the past.
The release date of this untitled Star Wars film hints at Edwards’ busy schedule to come, and it also means that he’ll have to go straight into prepping for this Star Wars before going to work on another Godzilla movie. The release date is set for December 16, 2016
However, Legendary is so happy with him that they’re willing to wait for him to return, instead of hiring a new director to take over the reins. Must be nice to have that kind of job security, no?
