Losing someone you love or having your heart broken can be one of the most painful things you can go through as a teenager. There are so many emotions…some new and some not so new…that flood your heart all at once. It is easy to become depressed and feel like you are living in a fog. If you are broken hearted and feeling down, here are five tips to help you get back to being the wonderful you that you are!
Spend more time with your friends
Having a great set of friends can do wonders for your broken heart. Reach out to them and enjoy the fact that you have more time now. Although you might be sad about it now, you will reach a point where you are thankful for the good times you can now have with your besties. Great friends are wonderful to help you realize you are far from alone.
Put on the Relationship Brakes
Whatever you do, avoid getting into another relationship for a good long while. Some of the worst relationships of all time happened because someone dove in way too soon after a broken heart. Wait until you can give the best of yourself and make certain you are not trying to replace someone that hurt you. Chances are they are not a good choice to be copying.
Allow yourself to feel your feelings
Often we try to clam up and push our feelings to the back so that nobody sees. The truth is there is value in letting your feelings out. There is something to be gained and a freedom in allowing yourself to feel. Find a trusted friend or relative and let it all out. Scream, kick and cry all you need to in the safety of your own home. You will quickly find that it is exhausting to do so and it will lose it’s luster. Still, allow your feelings to be what they are. There is no roadmap and it changes for everyone.
Don’t Blame Yourself
For a little while, you will blame yourself if you are not careful. It is natural to wonder what is wrong with us when we are rejected by someone. This is a valuable skill when we have done something wrong and we can learn this way. If we have a broken heart, it is easy to confuse this. You are deserving of love and respect as an individual. Understand that a rejection is not a rejection of you as a person…it is a reflection of the other person. Try to avoid the blame game. It helps nobody and you will end up hurting even more.
Keep yourself busy
The number one thing you can do to get over a broken heart is to fill up your schedule. Everything you do at first will be painful so this is going to seem like the opposite. Get out there and experience as many things each day as you can. Make yourself as busy as possible and stay around folks that have a positive outlook on things. You will be shocked at how this can change your perspective. Cull your friends list to only those that will be supportive and positive.
Getting over a broken heart is not the end of the world but it can feel that way. Know that you are not the first and you will certainly not be the last and never feel alone. You are in great company with millions of others from the past and future. Know that you deserve the best and be thankful that at least one of the ones you were not meant to be with are out of the way.
