Is anyone really surprised to learn that The Fault in Our Stars absolutely crushed its’ competition at the box office this weekend? It brought in $42 million and only cost $12 million to make. What that means is that even in its’ opening weekend a whole bunch of people connected to this film made a nice chunk of change. Let’s also remember that Tom Cruise also opened and this young woman’s story was what more viewers were rushing to see. Part of the reason is undoubtedly Shailene Woodley. If anyone isn’t already convinced that girlfriend is going to have a long-running career in Hollywood this film will be the thing that cements it in your mind. She is magical and will know doubt be the next clear cut “It Girl”.
I also happen to love that The Fault in Our Stars is based on another young adult book. I have been saying for a long time that some of the best stuff out there is currently found on the YA shelves and TFIOS is just another good example. It’s based on the 17-year old character of Hazel Grace Lancaster who has been battling cancer for 4 years. Thanks to an experimental treatment thyroid cancer has moved into Hazel’s lungs where it will sit until it eventually kills her. The writing is on the wall here in black Sharpie marker. You know exactly how this story is going to end but all of the little connections and moments in Hazel’s smart ass personality keep you sucked in until the inevitable.
TFIOS is a film that had tons of ready-made fans lining up last weekend and look for it to continue slaying as all of those not familiar with the book need to see what everyone is talking about firsthand. Did you check out Shailene’s performance yet? What did you prefer, the book or film adaptation? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
